3 Bands You Should Be Listening To: Part 2

Here are 3 more bands you should be listening to, if you're not already!

1. Gogol Bordello

Why:
This "gypsy punk" band is made up of a group of very talented immigrants from several different countries, founded by lead singer Eugene Hütz (a part-Romani man from Kiev, Ukraine).  There is strong Romani, Russian and Latino influence on the music, and it is both exciting and meaningful.  I had the privilege of seeing them 4 times in July when we were following our favorite band, Man Man, who opened for them, and I came away soaked in wine and full of energy and fire.  Especially if your family is from elsewhere, like mine (I'm a 2nd generation Armenian-American), you will love this music--but people from all backgrounds can enjoy it, and that's part of the magic!

2. Stars

Why:
Stars is an indie rock band from Toronto, which features singers Torquil Campbell and Amy Millan.  Campbell and Millan are both members of the band Broken Social Scene, and Millan was in short-lived band Edith's Mission with Emily Haines (Metric, Broken Social Scene).  Both Campbell and Millan have gentle, beautiful voices that bring out strongly any emotion they convey.  From songs about war to beauty to love, this band has never gotten the attention they deserve.  I count them among my top 5 favorites of all time, and I have a feeling you will too.

3. Laura Marling

Why:
English folk singer Laura Marling is folk rock at its finest.  A member of the original line-up of Noah and the Whale, Marling has since found the most success as a solo artist.  Her deep, rich voice and soulful guitar-playing lend a maturity to her music far beyond most modern folk rock (and she's only 24!).  If you're a lover of folk, you're missing out if you don't know her.
