A Chore That Bores

A Chore that Bores

This chore…today’s topic.

It’s Friday, so I thought we could have a little fun on the blog today. Last night on Facebook, there was a good discussion going on my wall about grocery shopping. Before we get into it, here’s how the dialog went at about 9:30 p.m. between my husband and me that prompted me to post something about the topic for discussion:

“I’m going to run to Safeway. Can you put some things on the list we need?” he said.

“What do we need?” I asked. (See, if you play dumb, you get yourself out of it completely).

“Just write down what we need,” he said.

We wrote a few things down. He took the list.

“I don’t feel like going to Safeway,” he said.

“No one EVER feels like going to Safeway,” I replied.

Now, listen up, Safeway. I have nothing against you personally. You’re a nice store. The produce is generally pretty good. It’s just that it’s a chore that bores.

I hate grocery shopping. H-A-T-E it.

You know how people run a race, and they time themselves to see how quickly they can finish? That’s me every single, stinking time I go to the grocery store. In the back of my mind, I’m always thinking: How long do I have to be in here? How quickly can I get out?

That’s my motto when it comes to shopping for food. It’s like having a bad tooth. Just pull it and get it over with.

My friend Stacey apparently feels differently, along with another friend of mine, Maumi. They both claim to love it. Stacey says she enjoys being in the grocery store, that she doesn’t mind the task, along with a list of other chores that you may find surprising, like vacuuming or doing the dishes. Maumi says she makes the grocery shopping part of family day on Sunday, but she doesn’t care for vacuuming too much.

I guess if you can make food shopping fun or part of a tradition, it might help.

As for me, I prefer to leave that task to someone else (love you, honey) or time myself as a sort of ‘race against the clock.’

There may be one exception to the rule, as my friend Chrissie pointed out—there’s Wegman’s.

Mario Batali’s Eataly in New York City

Shopping at Wegman’s is an entirely different shopping experience all together. It’s part shopping, part “window” shopping. There’s so much to see in that luxury food store. Kind of like Mario Batali’s food paradise in New York: Eataly. Have you been? An Italian Food Lover’s Paradise. Now that place is NOT a chore.

For those of you who love to spend your time strolling down aisles in search of your favorite products or those on sale, I’m sorry I’m not in your camp. I do enjoy food. I just don’t want to have to shop for it.
