An Oldie, but a Goodie  Let's Celebrate Being Single
Why are there no T.V. shows around these days depicting single women who are just trying to get by in life?
I recently came across some reruns of Living Single, back from '93. It seems the finger was on the pulse then, why isn't it so much now?
The cast features a group of four women who are on the journey of single hood together. It may seem that living together and experiencing much of what single women do that this group would not last as friends, but the show proves otherwise. It proves that the women are there for each other through thick and thin and every "single" struggle.
I haven't seen a show like this ever really, depicting exactly the quirky and most frustrating things that single people experience...the disappointment, anger, awkward moments, jealousy, competition and overall getting the sense of who you are when you watch these women...almost like having constant mirror moments as you watch.
I think these days people don't really want to acknowledge that "phase" as much anymore, as we're either too good for it, or have risen so much above it that it really just appears in our lives and is asked to exit out the back door. Women have become so independent and not needing of a man...not needing these experiences that their older and wiser friends and sisters have warned them about.
I just wanted to shine a spotlight on it as it struck a chord with me...So many times when one woman in the pack of single women meets a man, the friends are often dropped faster than a hot potato. So sad. But - these women, approach it in such a different and unique way. It seems that even if they were all not single anymore, they'd still be the very best of friends. I'm not so sure things can be that way for everyone all the time in real life. Maybe for some, though.
People become busy, the boyfriend or husband goal is checked off the list and friends become non existent (as most of the time if not more is spent with the boyfriend or husband instead of with the friends).
I think it may be refreshing to see how these 90's single women approach the subject and approach their worlds...stick together like glue through the 90's era...As you watch, make a mental note of how this is dealt with in the single culture now. Are things the same or different? The complexity of being single meets the women's simple and sometimes goofy social lives, their modest apartment, and their girlish demeanors all thrown into a world that could be so lonely and unchartered.
The only other show I can think of that involved singles, dating and frustration and quirky singles was Seinfeld. But somehow, the show didn't send the same type of messages, very funny and true, but still missing something about the real issues with singles...There were also three men in that sitcom and one woman. Also, Three's Company...extremely funny, but somehow it didn't seriously get to the issues of being single.
This is a group of women who are unlike any others I have known. They're all there for the journey not the result.
Check it out and see for yourself if you are not already familiar with Living Single...a BLAST FROM THE PAST...(I've included a clip, credits: YouTube)...

P.S. Maybe this may prove to be a gentle reminder of the importance of friendships no matter if there is a man around or not. Everybody needs nurturing, support and someone who knows them and loves them. Isn't there a quote out there that says something like "To know me is to love me"? Sorry for not Googling, but I think you get the picture.
