Are You Comfortable in Your Own Skin?

Posted on the 29 July 2011 by Jaysav1982 @jaysav1982

My feet feel as though they have swollen to three times their normal size, my head hurts from the 6 hours of meetings I have had to endure today – and to be completely honest my bottom feels as though I have been sat on a brick wall all day. All in all – I am completely worn out.

After a long hard day, grafting away in the office I can not wait to get home, kick off my shoes and sit down ready for my evening dose of soaps. So as I reach for my favorite tub of choc chip, chocolate brownie and everything chocolate ice cream joined with a (little too large) glass of wine, I switch on the TV waiting to find out what is happening in the scripted streets of TV land.

As always, whilst flicking through the channels I come across the adverts that make me want to turn my eyes inside out just so I do not have to endure the pain. I am talking about the, completely fake and unrealistic, fashion / make up / perfume adverts that will only show the gorgeous, thin and frankly un-natural ‘beauties‘ who can make anyone feel depressed. You know the ones I mean. The size 4 models used to show us mere mortals that we can wear a skin-tight dress and not look like we are in a Halloween costume. The ‘brand new’ foundation that will cure even the most dire under eye bags in one swipe of a brush. And the exotic perfume by that big name designer that is guaranteed to make us irresistible to any man.

These are the advertisements that are guaranteed to send any woman into a state of deep depression – seeing this fake beauty on TV then having to see our own reflection in the mirror is, well, damaging.

Why don’t/can’t we do anything about this?? For me, seeing these adverts make me less likely to go out and buy what ever it is being shown and more likely to want to starve my self for a few years just to be able to be accepted into a society where to be thin is to be allowed…….

What are these images doing to future generations?? Is my 8-year-old daughter going have to grow up in a society where to be successful, having a stick thin figure and immaculate hair/skin is the only way forward. NO. Is being comfortable in your own skin a thing of the past now??

For now – Think about it !!!!
