If you’re a Facebook regular (which let’s face it, most of us are at this point, whether we like it or not), there are are a few things you’ve probably grown to expect—oversharing, poor, poor grammar, and the ever-cycling campaigns for a dislike button.
In and of itself, there’s nothing too strange about a dislike button. In fact, it’s one of the few places online where you can’t express your dissatisfaction with a single click. The internet is rife with dislike buttons, as illustrated by the one at the bottom of this very page (click it at your own risk). What does that say about us?
Personally, I’m of the belief that the lack of a negative option is quite refreshing. Will this stop the trolls? Of course not, there’s still plenty of room in that comment section to spread their bile, but a Facebook with a dislike button would open a whole other can of worms—the casual pessimist.
There are plenty of posts on Facebook that fully deserve to be disliked. Facebook is no stranger to hateful ill-informed ramblings, but those posts are what blocking, flagging, and reporting are for. That’s not what I’m worried about. It’s the petty dislikes that concern me. If you can’t commit to a few words, clearly and kindly explaining your displeasure with my post, then perhaps you shouldn’t be expressing your half-baked opinion to begin with.
It’s the holiday season, what better time to end the campaign for yet another way to spread negativity without any personal cost? This Christmas, let’s all take a dislike button for Facebook off of our wish lists.
