…Be Practical

Posted on the 19 October 2018 by Zer @the2women

…Be PracticalNostalgia is a powerful thing, especially in the autumn. Something about the changing leaves and cooler temperatures makes the world want to wrap itself up in a warm blanket of the familiar.

With that in mind, today is a flashback Flick Friday. Having just celebrated its 20th anniversary, "Practical Magic," is a film that is shockingly relevant all these years later. This tale of power, family, and sisterhood continues to enchant.
The Owens sisters struggle with owning their power and meeting the expectations of the world they live in. It's a struggle that resonates throughout history and especially in the midst of the Me Too movement.

One of the film's central plotlines deals with an abusive relationship and some serious victim blaming. It illustrates in a supernatural way society's shortcomings when it comes to helping victims.

The message at its heart is power, not just the magical variety but the kind that would threaten the status quo. Appear too powerful and the angry mob starts to gather. Appear too weak and risk the loss of who they are destined to be.

It's not one thing, but a little bit of everything. It's sweet, goofy, sad, sassy, sentimental, funny, and dramatic at times. It's not perfect, but it doesn't pretend to be. And quite frankly, we love it just the way it is. I mean, what would the world be without midnight margaritas?

...just for fun:

A reminder of how far movie trailers have come in the past 20 years...
