It’s a special cinematic Sunday, and as you’ve probably guessed, it’s about “Brave.”
This is not a review of the movie, that’ll come Friday. This is a reflection.
For those who don’t know the significance of “Brave”—shame on you. Lucky for you, we’re here to catch you up.
This is Pixar’s first feature film with a female lead. We’ll give you a moment to contest that fact. Everyone does, but you will eventually arrive at the conclusion that this statement is true, so here we are.
Naturally, this means a lot of people are expecting big things from this movie. 2WC in preparation for the forth-coming Flick Friday review saw “Brave” this weekend and we couldn’t help but notice something surprising about our very male audience.
In case you didn’t catch that, 2WC was in the minority as was the under 18 crowd.
True, this was one showing at one theater out of hundreds of thousands across the country and around the world. And don’t get us wrong, we don’t think this is a bad thing. We just want to know why. Seriously, what’s the deal?
Ladies, are you too proud to go to the “kids” film (that’s its own blog topic)? This isn’t just your run of the mill mindless kids film, it’s Pixar. You know the people who made that one movie about the old guy and the balloons, that made you cry. Oh, and the one about the robot that made you teary eyed (seriously what’s up with the waterworks themes?). These should be right up your alley. We get that it’s the weekend, and there are lots of things to get done, but don’t you deserve a break?
Children (primarily the girls), you’re slacking. What happened to the good old-fashioned broken record, “please, please, please”? Good luck coming up with your Halloween costume this year without Disney and Pixar’s guidance.
Gentlemen, kudos for being there. Nice film choice. But seriously, why? And without the token “look I brought a kid with me, it’s okay that I’m at a kids film” child. Is it the Steve Jobs affiliation? More importantly, why weren’t you at “Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter”?
Maybe these questions will never be answered, but you have to admit it’s a bit surprising for a movie that appears from the surface to be another Disney princess flick (maybe next time our female will get to branch out in her profession). I guess for now we’ll just be happy that this movie appears to break the mold and stereotypes with film audiences (set to come in #1 with an estimated $65 mil).
