We live in an age of distraction. Our attention is being pulled at from just about every direction. This is not news, but it is a problem.

Now, people are being diagnosed with nomophobia—a fear of being without your phone. (Not to be confused with fomophobia, which is of course a fear of having a fear of missing out, or phone-home-phobia, which is or course a fear of E.T.)

Before you rush off to be diagnosed, I have good news: There’s an online test. You can take it here: nomophobia test

…or you can take my totally untested, and not backed by any sort of science, cellphone addiction test:

  1. Are you reading this on your phone while in the room with other people who you know (and like)?
  2. Are you walking and reading this on your phone?
  3. Are you sitting in a restroom and reading this on your phone?
  4. Are you seriously still reading this on your phone?

If you answered yes to any of these final three questions, you may have a phone addiction. Don’t worry there’s hope. I have three individual pieces of advice for you based on the circumstances of your particular condition.

  1. Put the phone down and enjoy the company of those around you.
  2. Look up before you walk into someone or something.
  3. Just lie to me. I didn’t need to know this, but you might want to consider a serious
  4. Seriously, you’re still reading this on your phone?
