…Capitalize

braindead-poster-picWe’ve officially entered the summer television season, which in the past has meant lots and lots of reruns. Thankfully, that’s no longer the case.

In recent years, we’ve seen the rise of the summer series. Usually limited to 10 or so episodes, they require less of a time commitment, and tend to be on the lighter side .

That’s certainly the case for CBS’s new summer, dramedy—“BrainDead.”

That’s not to say it lacks intellectual food for thought. Created by the same crew that brought us seven wonderful seasons of “The Good Wife,” this quirky dramedy offers a fun twist on the traditional hour-long, political drama.

“BrainDead,” tells the story of a struggling, documentary film-maker, Laurel Healy (Mary Elizabeth Winstead), who gets bribed into helping out with the family business for 6 months. That business, as you might have guessed, is politics. Specifically, she’s helping out/spying on her senator brother. However, what makes the show worth your time and interest, is what comes next.

While dealing with supporters’ complaints, she stumbles across the beginnings of an alien invasion. One that results in extreme personality changes, an odd obsession with The Cars “You Might Think,” and brain-loss.

While it’s by no means a “thinker” it’s definitely not pure fluff. Think something in between “Veep,” and “The West Wing,” with a bit of the style and whimsy of “Men in Black.”

While I’ve only seen the pilot episode, if the remainder of the short season follow in the same vein, this summer show should be a real treat.
