Happy Cinco de Mayo!
As someone who is Irish-German, and not even a little bit Mexican, I’ve always felt a little detached from this holiday. Now social media has made it an annual reminder of how many, many people think today is Mexico’s Independence Day. (It’s not. For the actual history I’ll refer you to the History Channel.)
Although if we’re using Twitter as a guide, people are spending way more time learning about guacamole and margaritas than Mexican history. It’s a shame, but the likelihood of truly educating the guacamole/margarita loving populace about today’s true significance is up there with explaining the story of St. Patrick’s Day to green beer enthusiasts.
Still, between the tequila and tacos, it’s nice to know that a few of us will learn something today (besides which combinations of tequila and tacos don’t end well). Happy Cinco de Mayo all, be safe, and remember that it’s Tuesday.
