Lets talk about bath products and perfume. They cost a freaking fortune. Mostly because they smell really good. Solution? Make your own good smelling stuff. Here’s what to do:

1. Pick a scent that you like (or a couple scents.) Choose something classic like lavender or vanilla.

2. Go shopping. Stop at the grocery store, the drug store or shop online. Here’s your list:

  • Essential oil in your chosen scent ($10 – $20, depending on size)
  • Epsom salts ($10 for a big big)
  • Sea salt ($10 – $20, depending on size of bag)
  • Baking soda (you probably have this, but it costs a couple bucks)
  • Spray bottle ($1 to $5, depending on how fancy you want to get)
  • Distilled water (a couple bucks)
  • Jojoba oil ($10)
  • Herbs and vodka (optional)

3. Make Stuff.

  • Mix the salts, baking soda and essential oil to create scented bath salts. You can add some herbs, like rosemary, lavender or orange peel, for added scent.
  • Pour distilled water into the spray bottle and add 15-20 drops of essential oil. Shake. Now you have a pillow, room and body spray. Instead of water, you could use plain vodka. The alcohol in it dries faster than water. Don’t worry, you won’t smell like liquor.
  • Add 15-20 drops of essential oil to jojoba oil and you have a scented massage oil, perfume oil and moisturizer.

Buy a few essential oils and create your own signature scent. Use calming scents for bath products and pillow sprays. Use sexy scents to make a special date-night perfume. You can get pretty creative. Or just stick with vanilla and always smell fantastic.

The moral of the story is that you can create several homemade products (in large quantities) for under $50. These products are just as good as their store bought counterparts, but they cost significantly less and don’t have any icky preservatives or bad plastics.
