Chicken Shed Update

Posted on the 25 April 2011 by Chelseajmartin

So several people, other than me, spent a ton of time this past weekend converting our 10’ by 12’ shed into a stellar chicken domicile. I lent a helping hand, but in no way can take credit for the major progress that has been made.

As of right now, the shed is split in half. (Hopefully the other half will become a shelter for two dairy goats!) There have been two fully screened and functional windows installed in the south wall to allow for ventilation and SUNSHINE! The chickens now have a huge pen area to call their very own. It is complete with some shredded bark from last year’s landscape, grass, small trees, and moss. Everything a chicken yard needs.

Plans for the future include covering the run with deer netting to protect our lovely chickens from aerial attacks, a permanent gate for the yard, install nesting boxes and perches, finish insulating and covering the walls.

Sounds like a lot to do but these chickens have got to get out of the basement. They are still being housed in a large dog pen but are rather discontent- much like their owners. This past weekend they spent the majority of two days out in the yard with our 4 original bantams learning how to be big chickens. I don’t think they were too thrilled to be returned to the basement.

Hopefully we (the royal we because I’m not sure how much help I am) will get the shed into working order so our 12 chickens can move in!
