I have been aboard the Good ship Internet since it set sail.  For me it served an essential purpose; it provided me with an alternative to the everyday ephemeral world beyond my window.  It was my domain.  it was as if  I were crossing from one world into another.  It was my wardrobe into Narnia.  It was nothing short of magical.  Back then the internet was an escape from real life.  Now it is an extension of it.  And sometimes that saddens me.

And we had such faith in it.  A friend of mine who was a graduate of MIT and was part way through a PhD was convinced that the ability to communicate instantaneously with people across the world would bring peace and good will to all men.  I was much more cynical.  I take no pleasure in having been right.  Stop the Internet,  I want to get off.
