Eighteen

Posted on the 19 August 2017 by Scribe Project @ascribeproject

Eighteen, the age in which we became legal adults. Rather – we’re titled as adults and should be responsible, mature, and classed. Yet, we remain children at heart with the vivid imagination, magical dreams and so on. It would be a shame to lose all of that to adulthood. Wonder is everlasting, or at least I think it should be.

Eighteen, can go one of two ways or more, that’s subjective.  Either way, you are now a high school graduate. That part of your life is over. No more school exams, no more morning assemblies or perfectly scheduled timetables with the occasional half-days. Nor do you have the pleasure of seeing all your best friends, colleagues, mentors and so on every single day. Or the view of the sun beaming down your endless hallways in between classes. The constant chatter and bustle of the younger students running back and forth from their classes. The warm hugs that greet you in the morning when you arrive, in the middle of the day just because they felt you needed it or in the late afternoon when you’re leaving to complete the mountain of assignments you have been “blessed” with. And much more. But that’s okay, because, it’s life.

  • So, the first way in which it can go:

Okay, high school done, next step, university, then a career and so on.  You know, the hallmark movie lifestyle with a few more bumps in the road because let’s be real – no human being finds love that easily nor is everyone’s love story a fairytale. Regardless, it’s the structured, regulated path. And it’s great, depending on who you are. I cannot begin to fathom what it’s like to know what you want to do with your future and to have some sort of idea of how your life will look like in 5 years, however – it sounds nice. Once again, subjective.

  • The other way:

Which I have personally happened to take involuntarily – is the one where you feel slightly stuck in making your choices for your future. University is an option, not a necessity, seems kind of perplexing at this point because how can you go to university and not know what to study? They say people go years before knowing what they really want to do with their lives, years before finding something that makes them genuinely happy.

Speaking from an eighteen-year-old’s perspective, it doesn’t feel like something that can just catch your eye when you least expect it. As the days go by, things get a little more confusing, a little more exciting and a little less daunting; look on the bright side, you’re living your life, things are happening – c’est vie!

A very good friend of mine convinced me, that things don’t always need to be per plan because, at any given point in time, your entire life could change.

Plans don’t always work, so there’s no need to worry about the future so much.

Live in the moment, and everything that’s meant to happen will happen.

After all, you’re just eighteen.
