Every Cloud has a Silver Lining

Every Cloud has a Silver Lining

by Nabanita Dhar

When I first read this adage as a kid, I ran out of the house to look for the silver lining in the clouds. How beautiful it would be, I thought, the silver peeking out through the white and grey clouds. Of course, I couldn't find any. Though the clouds were in plenty, living as I was in the abode of clouds then (Meghalaya, for the uninitiated), there were no silver linings. None whatsoever.

Of course, I was too young then to understand the difference between literal and figurative interpretation of sayings. But once I did, I realized there are times when even looking for that proverbial silver lining leads us nowhere, until it does. Yes, because as hard as it might be to believe at times, that silver lining is always there. It is always there.

These past few weeks have been quite difficult in the city I live. With curfews, unrest, and agitation, the common man here has been having a hard time which obviously includes me as well. Added to that with the husband being out of town, the difficulties have only multiplied.

Living alone with an infant is truly not easy. Not to sound like a whiner, but commuting with the little one, using public transport and all the time worrying about her safety has been quite taxing. Cabs being cancelled at the last minute or just completely unavailable or having to venture out with her on days looming with uncertainty hasn't been easy on my mind. And as it generally happens, my mood started going into a downward spiral overwhelmed with all that I had to worry about or take care of alone. For some reason, everything and everyone seemed to be out there to get me. The clouds didn't seem to have any silver lining for a long time until they did.

Strangers can sometimes chase away all the gloom

A cabbie, seeing me stranded with my daughter, weighed down by worry and those heavy bags on my shoulders, decided to drop me home even though he was done for the day. Not only that, he even played songs for her, carried my bags and made sure I was comfortable all the way.

All this when I was on the brink of despair, stranded with the little one while everyone was scurrying home. I won't lie-I was almost in tears when this good man went out of his way to help me, he was my silver lining that day. He was all heart and I must have done something good forto bring him my way.

One of the by-products of curfews is working Saturdays which inevitably presses the panic button in me as the crèche doesn't function on weekends. But because there is no dearth of goodness in this world, my daughter's creche was open on that particular weekend to help us working moms.

Yes, you are right, it was the silver lining again. I can't believe I was worried about putting her in that crèche. The people there, those sweet women, I can't tell you what they do for mothers like me. I feel like hugging them to show how grateful I am. In fact, I probably should.

Juggling so many things from dusk till dawn, I move from panic to frustration so many times during the day that I have actually lost count. But then, something happens out of the blue which makes me feel extremely grateful as well. People going out of the way to help me, people I have never met in my life and probably never will again.

If this doesn't keep life and love thriving in the universe then what does?

So, when you are down and out, unable to spot the silver lining, remember that it is indeed right there. It is always there.
