This week’s movie takes us to the thrilling world of the sci-fi thriller with Ridley Scott’s “Alien: Covenant.”
This chapter of the “Alien” franchise picks up where the 2012 “Prometheus” left off, opening with a closer look at the beginnings of David (a synthetic human being played by Michael Fassbender) and a rather profound conversation with his creator, Peter Weyland (Guy Pearce).
This incredible scene is a microcosm of why this movie works—it’s smart and well-acted.
From this serene moment, we’re hurled into an inter-galactic journey aboard the colonization ship Covenant, where a new model of David named Walter (also played by Michael Fassbender) is forced to awaken the slumbering crew when they encounter unexpected turbulence. The outcome proves tragic for most.
From here on out the pace is swift (with plenty of gore and gunplay), but with the help of an incredible cast, the story manages to maintain the depth of that opening scene.
In addition to Mr. Fassbender who is a duplicitous delight (in a dark way) as both Walter and David (and spoiler, they do come face-to-face), Katherine Waterston as Daniels and Danny McBride as Tennessee provide some incredible new characters for this universe, and I look forward to seeing more from them both (fingers crossed). Carmen Ejogo, Billy Crudup, and even a brief appearance from James Franco round out this fantastic cast.
“Alien: Covenant” is most likely one of the bloodier flicks of the summer, so you’ve been warned. But if you can handle the shock and awe, the bones of this blockbuster are strong and worthy of summer afternoon at the movies.
