…File Away

 …File Away Happy Tax Weekend!

Okay, I realize there’s nothing exceptionally happy about it, especially if you haven’t filed yet. However, there is a little bit of a bright spot.

As you hopefully noticed, you didn’t have to have your taxes filed yesterday. What you may not have not know is why.

It’s not because tax day fell on a Friday, and the IRS doesn’t work on Fridays. Although, that would be nice for them.

No, this extension falls under the holiday rule. What holiday? Well, as any good American citizen knows, on this date (April 16) in 1862, the District of Columbia Emancipation Act (separate from the Emancipation Proclamation) was passed by Congress and signed by President Lincoln. Since it fell on a weekend, the official celebration was moved to Friday.

Cool, right?

Which means you can thank President Lincoln for the fact that your taxes will never be due on a Friday. Of course, for the procrastinators that means you’ll lose a gorgeous spring weekend to taxes, but at least you got your Friday.

On that note, I’ll leave you to file away. Good luck!
