…Get Real

This What to Watch Wednesday I’m taking a break from the “what to watch,” and making a suggestion on what not to watch.

If you’ve been following our television suggestions, then you’ve probably noticed there’s one genre that we’ve steared clear of — reality.

Specifically, the Bachelor and Bachelorette series.

The Bachelor wrapped up their latest season this week, which means it will soon be time for the next season of The Bachelorette to kick-off. While I think the concept of both shows is ridiculous and demeaning to all of its contestants, at least there was some balance with the men and women taking turns being completely objectified…until now.

In the next season of The Bachelorette, there will be two bachelorettes.

No, they do not not both get to find true love. In fact, presumably, there will only be one after the first few episodes. That’s because they’re letting the male contestants pick which one they want to compete over. It’s a technique they apparently tried with The Bachelor in 2004, and wisely haven’t tried since.

While it was definitely demeaning on the Bachelor, applying the same technique to The Bachelorette is so blatantly an attempt to boost ratings that you almost feel sorry for the producers…almost.

If you’re having to resort to gimmicks that you seem to know are wrong (it’s been 11 years), it may be time to let the show go out with some semblance of dignity, if it had any to begin with.
