Every summer has its fair share of sequels. After all, it is blockbuster season. However, this summer seems exceptionally crowded.
So far this summer we’ve seen another “Avengers”, “Oceans”, “Deadpool”, and “Star Wars.” It doesn’t stop there, this week sees the release of “Incredibles 2,” and next week comes, “Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom.”
With “variety” like this, it’s important to remember that sometimes the sequel is better.
Qualifying something as “better,” especially a film, can seem pointless. After all, it’s a matter of opinion, right? Or is it?
“The Dark Knight,” is easily the best film in the Christian Bale/Christopher Nolan Batman trilogy. The chilling power of Heath Ledger’s joker erases any memory of the fact that “Batman Begins,” came before.
It’s hard to forget that “Toy Story 3” is a sequel, thanks to its unimaginative title. However, its heartwarming, tear-jerking tale got it an Oscar nomination in the Best Picture category, a feat achieved by few animated films.
Outside the realm of summer blockbusters, there’s “National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation,” and yes, “The Godfather Part II.”
Needless to say, most of these films had pretty decent predecessors, but they managed to make their next chapter better. My point being, sometimes sequels improve on what the original film started.
So with that, I’ll leave you to enjoy your weekend and hope for the best from this summer of sequels.
