Gluten Free with a Giraffe

In the last week I’ve done a lot of one of my favorite past times – eating!!

After Valentine’s day came and went (thank god), it was Friday which meant out for a meal with my housemate and some friends. We went to Giraffe in Bury St Edmunds and I have to say I was impressed with their service of catering for Coeliacs. The waitress was lovely and very helpful, she gave me the allergy list and pointed out to me what was worth trying. I actually managed to have a starter which wasn’t a plate of olives for once! Instead they had a duck tostada which was made from corn and so was gluten free. I very rarely get to have a starter any more as most restaurants seem to like to make their starters very bread orientated, such as garlic bread for example. It was absolutely delicious, the duck was cooked perfectly and the corn shell was crisp and not soggy at all. I would totally recommend trying it the next time you’re in a Giraffe restaurant whether you’re Coeliac or not.

For my main I had the Giraffe burger – without the bun of course! Instead the chefs very helpfully wrapped the burger, cheese, bacon and salad in a huge lettuce leaf which was really thoughtful as it made the whole thing easier to eat. This was also totally yummers, I didn’t realize how much I had missed a good burger! Unfortunately, Coeliac’s can’t eat Giraffe’s skin on chips as they are cooked in the same oil as products that contain gluten. Which to be honest I was a little disappointed about as what’s a burger without chips afterall?! But I decided to substitute them for the herb rice which was actually very tasty, if not a slightly random accompaniment.

By this time I was absolutely stuffed, so no dessert for me. I didn’t even look at the menu so I’m unsure as to what desserts Giraffe provide that are gluten free. Overall I was really pleased with my meal, I didn’t leave feeling jealous of my friends’ meals or like I had missed out at all. I will definitely be going back to my local Giraffe in the near future for a good feed!

Let me know if you’ve had any good gluten free eating out experiences lately, I love finding out about new places to indulge my taste buds!
