At this point in your Monday you’ve probably already heard all about last night’s Golden Globe Awards, which was a relatively low-key affair aside from one epic red carpet slip up and a few “surprise” wins…we totally called “Moonlight” and “The Crown.” Of course, all of those moments were eclipsed by the speech made by Meryl Streep as she accepted the Cecil B. DeMille Award.
If you haven’t seen it yet, it’s worth viewing, if only so you know what everyone is talking about. Ms. Streep used her acceptance speech for her lifetime achievement award as an opportunity to address certain injustices and concerning behaviors that we’ve all witnessed in the past year. It was a move that, no doubt, garnered more than a few eye-rolls from those who think that Hollywood should keep their opinions to themselves.
In this post-election world, saying that some should stay in their boxes while others are allowed to do as they please seems a bit ridiculous. Whether you think that Ms. Streep should have used her platform to talk politics or not, it’s hard to deny that her statement was poised, polished, and perfectly delivered. It was the kind of behavior we’ve seen far too little of from her intended target.
As you might have already seen (or guessed) the individual, who Ms. Streep never named but was clearly addressing, had plenty to say on Twitter this morning. It was so predictable that many who took it upon themselves to venture a guess at what the response might be were pretty darn close.
I won’t cover the specifics, but I will say one thing. We could all use a little more eloquence, patience, and level-headed rhetoric in our lives. To dismiss what Ms. Streep did as inappropriate is your right, but you’d be doing yourself a real disservice to not at least listen.
