It’s been two weeks since the Kentucky Derby, which can only mean one thing…we’re off to races again! Today’s diamond in the Triple Crown, the Preakness Stakes, isn’t as glamorous as the Kentucky Derby, but it’s just as (if not more) important.
The Derby may determine the frontrunner (and only runner) for winning the Triple Crown, but the Preakness is where that winner has to prove that they’re a serious contender. This year is extra special, as this will be the 140th running of the Stakes.
This year’s hopeful, American Pharoah, has the odds in his favor, but there’s never a sure thing in the world of horse racing. When it comes to actually winning the Triple Crown, well, the odds are most definitely not in his favor. It’s been nearly 40 years since the last Triple Crown winner (Affirmed in 1978…fun trivia knowledge) crossed the finish line.
Still, this could be the year when that losing streak is finally broken, and won’t you feel silly if you missed this deciding race. So, grab a Black-Eyed Susan (the official drink and flower of the race), and give up a whole two minutes of your Saturday afternoon. Seems like a small price to pay for witnessing history in the making.
