Happy Birthday Papa!, “Mang Pit” as Earistians call him, “Kakang Ido” to his relatives, “Idray” or “Pedro Penduko” when we used to tease him & “Peter” the name in his wildest dreams… haha… Wow! A couple of names but for real it was “PEDRO CASTILLO SANDOVAL”  A man of pure heart.

Happy 91st Birthday!!

My father really doesn't celebrate birthdays.  Honestly he forgets his own birthday, not because he's just too old to recall but I guess it was brought by his family's simple rural living.  He was a native from Batangas and A World War 2 survivor.  I could say that his life began at a dig of a soil.  It was God's will that led him to Manila and later find himself in love for vending ice cream.
Many had mistaken him as a bad guy because he looks tough, resilient man.  He is indeed loud...really loud, but would you believe that he’s more of an emotional type, such a “Cry baby”.  I remember when he cries every time my mom weren't able to get home on time.  He cries for so much worry, he cries for love.
He is an epitome of love.  He was 58yrs old when he get married.  Its never too late right??! And so they still got us three children.  It was a real life fun love story.  Afraid that my mom would't like an old man like him, and so he did lie on his age.  He left his good life in the province and face an uncertain life to start his own family.  He often told us “Magmahalan Kayong Magkakapatid”, cause we're all sort of stubborn kids that's why there's never a good day for him.  He's been unfortunate also to have a good relationship with his siblings.  It was his big regret!! He often cries at night praying that God would gave him the gift of peace and understanding.  In the end, family is what matters most.  He remains to his standing that "Blood is thicker than Water."
He is a good father.   A good provider!!  He works from morning 'til dawn.. I’m sure students from EARIST would prove that not a single day they haven't seen my father standing or seated on a bench vending ice cream.  Even when he’s in pain, he didn't quit.  He was already 75yrs old above and still tries to get up everyday to work.  I was amazed!! In fact, his job wasn’t easy…nor would I've wanted to do the same.  Not because I didn't like it but because I really "Can’t" do it.  I’m not even half of his will.  Every morning, he walks his cart from the long roads of Sampaloc to España up to Nagtahan, then do the same on his way back home in the afternoon.   If he earns not much, he will try to take a risk to get in to other places and come back late night, only to find a few coins added to his pocket.  He worked until he no longer can.

He's a good friend.  He never wanted to see someone down.  You will often hear him saying "Kaibigan kapag may sabaw, Kapag wala'y taeng kalabaw"  This is relative to those friends whom being untrue to each other.  On the contrary, he's a complete opposite of it.  He just love the quote because it makes his peers laugh out loud every time he tries to enunciate the words.
Today, we celebrated his birthday with a plate of Chinese noodles with a big hope that God would send our love for him.  I wanted to make it loud this time... a HUGE shoutout to my page, HAPPY HAPPY BIRTHDAY PA!! WE LOVE YOU SO MUCH!!
