Homemade Vanilla Extract

Posted on the 13 November 2012 by Redneckprincess @RdNeckPrincess

Ok…so I bake. Alot. I love vanilla and use tons of it, but it is so expensive, so I figured I would try and make my own. I just got it all in the jar today, and you have to let it sit for a couple of months before you use it, but hey, it’s Vodka and Fresh Vanilla beans, how can it go wrong?

I found the Vanilla beans at my local health food store, and the Vodka…well of course I had some on hand.

Homemade Vanilla Extract

What you need:

  • 3 Vanilla Beans
  • 1 cup Vokda
  • I glass jar with tight fitting lid

What you do:

~Take a sharp knife and slice the vanilla bean down the center leaving an inch at the end connected.

~Put the beans in a jar with a tight fitting lid, you can use any kind you like, a mason jar will work, it is just awkward to use it from there so I would have a smaller bottle to pour it into to use once it’s ready. Cover completely with the Vodka.

~Give the bottle a shake every once and a while, store in a cool dark place for 2 months or longer.

This lasts for years, you can top off the vodka and add a fresh bean after a while as you use the vanilla, just remember to shake it occasionally :)
