If Only I Had Asked Her

Not quite waiting tables, but I was working at an ice cream shop. A
woman came in with five kids who looked about 10 and younger.
Our scoops are a bit large so as she ordered the oldest kid’s cone I
asked, “Do you want regular or kid’s sizes?”
“Regular’s fine.”
First cone gets handed over and she glances down at it.
“Oh, wow. That’s pretty big.”
“If you’d rather I can do kid’s scoops.”
“No, we’ll get regulars.”
I fill the rest of her orders, moving oldest to youngest. The last two
kids look about 5 and 3. So I figure I should check again.
“Are you sure you don’t want kid’s scoops for these two?”
“Oh, no. Give them regulars too.”
Everyone’s got their ice cream so I ring them up. The total’s around
$20. My co-worker has been helping the woman’s friend who’s buying ice
cream for her own five kids. The friend’s total is about $13.
My customer blinks in surprise and asks her friend, “How come yours is
so much cheaper.”
Friend answers with the obvious, “I got kid’s cones. You got
regulars.”
My customer looks at her kids, happily eating their ice cream, and
looks back at me and says in absolute seriousness, “I meant to get
kid’s cones.”
I have no idea if she expected me to toss out the half-eaten cones and
start fresh or give her a discount for being an idiot. Either way, it
didn’t happen.
