Image of the Day: Hugs at Church

Posted on the 02 January 2018 by Belinda Mccarthy @b_mccarthyphoto

A Happy New Year to all of you, and I hope you've all had wonderful Christmastimes! If you're based in Dorset like me, or nearby, you probably didn't get the snow that much of the country enjoyed (although 'enjoyed' probably isn't the correct word if it was stopping you getting out and about!). In this part of the country, it rarely snows.... which is probably fortuitous if you're planning a winter wedding, as it means that your guests won't get stuck in snowdrifts on the way to church. I did photograph a winter wedding a while back where the bride and groom were so keen for snow that they hired a snow machine to make sure they had some though.... which made for some wonderful winter wonderland photographs!

On this particular wedding day featured on the blog today, we had the wintry weather... but of the cold and bright kind instead. So, no snow, but plenty of reasons for get out the winter coats - and share some of the bodywarmth with hugs! At this church wedding, which took place in West Somerset, it was quickly apparent to me that there were guests attending who lived abroad, and so there were many heartfelt reunions in place as they saw each other again for the first time in a good while. These moments are always wonderful to photograph, and capturing the pure delight on people's faces as they see each other again is just a joy.

That's why I love this particular image so much, which was taken as the guests arrived for church. You don't even have to see the smiles to know that they are there - body language is everything here!

So if you happen to see an old friend today (or even a new one), go on, give them a hug. After all, it's cold outside.... and who wouldn't want a hug, anyway?!
