Just a Spoonful of Sugar Helps the Medicine Go Down

Well I hate to break it to you Mary Poppins but this time you are wrong!
Yesterday I had my Glucose Tolerance Test (“GTT”) to check whether I had gestational diabetes – something which if you have it is fairly short lived as it is supposed to disappear when you are no longer pregnant. That being said, if your doctor does determine that you are at risk, then it is definitely best to take the test, as if you do have it, it can cause some fairly awful problems for you and your baby. I got tested as I was determined to be at risk as I suffer from hypertension and also because I am pregnant with twins.
The test entails, you fasting from 9pm the night before your appointment, turning up to the hospital super early, and on arrival getting a blood test done by a moody nurse (I believe the moodiness of the nurse is optional in some hospitals, but apparently not in mine). You are then given 2 glasses of the most disgusting glucose drink you could ever imagine - it tasted a bit lemony, was of a syrupy consistency and was so sweet it made my teeth hurt. Anyways...after you have managed to down the nectar of evil you get to sit for 2 hours, trying not to hurl whilst your babies bounce around your insides like they are at a 90s-style rave whilst you twitch in your seat – a side effect I like to call the sugar shakes. When the fun of the 2 hours waiting is over, you go back to see the (moody) nurse who then takes more blood and sends you home.
One great thing about the GTT, is that you get your results through quickly. I got my results through on the same day. My lovely Midwife Debbie rang to tell me that my test came back negative and that I did not have to give up the chocolate (well, those weren’t her exact words, but basically that was what my baby-crazy brain interpretated them as). It was a relief to find out that I do not have gestational diabetes and I really appreciated the fact that I did not have to wait the usual 48 hours-to a few weeks that you have to wait for some test results.
Anyway, that is one less thing to worry about. Phew!
