Just Another Love Story - Part 6

Many days had passed since their conversation in the cafeteria. She realized that he was avoiding her. She did not know why. She was quite baffled. She was sure she had gotten his meaning right that night. But she was not sure of his behavior of late. It made her sad. Sadder than a lot of things had in the past. She was not going to let sadness hold her back. She went up to the terrace of her apartment building. She winced as she accidentally stepped on some loose stones. She had forgotten to wear her slippers in that moment of impulse. She dialled his number. “Hello?” he had let the phone ring a long time before he answered. “Why are you behaving this way? Why are you not talking to me? Have I done something wrong?” she tried hard to keep her voice from quivering. But the tears were too close to falling. “Listen, I – I am sorry if I have been rude, but that conversation in the cafeteria should have never happened. I am sorry.” “Because?” “Because you – no, you will never understand.” “Maybe you should explain and I will try to keep up.” “It’s too complicated. I don’t have a daughter. All that was made up. But you must know, I never will want to have a daughter. Or a son. Or a marriage. I agree that I like you. But there is no future for you and me. Eventually I will break your heart. I don’t want to do that. You don’t see it. I –“ She cut him off mid-sentence, “Maybe we could see where this goes. You said so yourself that you like me. It’s no secret that I like you. Why do you want to think of the future?” “I won’t change my thoughts. There’s a lot I want to accomplish in my life, and a relationship is not going to help me.” “But you love me?” He hesitated. Then said, “Yes.” “Then I’ll step out of your life when the time comes.” --TBC-- Copyright Petrichor and Clouds 2013 at petrichorandclouds.blogspot.com Please do not reproduce the material published here.
