Learning for Pleasure

Posted on the 16 July 2013 by Rigger53

Not everything my parents taught me had to do with saving a dollar. Some of the things I learned, from watching my mom,and dad had to do with entertainment, and just plain fun.I remember how my dad taught me how to fish with a cane pole.Yes. A cane pole.My dad showed me how to tie the fishing line, onto the pole, and how much line to put on.Then my dad showed me how to tie on a hook, and sinker, and back then,we never heard of slip corks, so I was shown how to clip on a cork, and how far to place it above the hook.I was also shown how to bait the hook, and make sure the tip wasn’t showing, and while I was fishing,I had to check the hook,to make sure the tip stayed hidden,or the fish wouldn’t bite the hook.   In my later teen years,I started a job,and got my driving licence, and purchased a car,and a fishing boat.MY dad helped me set up the boat,by showing me how to make anchors out of coffee cans. The metal ones.We mixed up some concrete, and poured it into the cans, and placed a large eye bolt, into the concrete, and sunk large stones into the concrete, around the eye bolt,to hold it in place, until the concrete hardened over night. The next day I tied about 20 feet of nylon rope to each anchor, and then I tied one on to each end of the boat.My dad also helped me hook up my boat trailer lights plug,to my car.I watched my dad do this,to make sure I knew how to do it later on.When I wasn’t going fishing,my dad,my brothers, and me,were on a bowling league.I was getting disgusted, about throwing a what was called,a backup hook. The problem was,I was holding the ball, wrong.I was holding my right hand on the side, and my left hand underneath the ball.Guess what?I started watching how my dad held his bowling ball, which was one hand on each side of the ball, and not one hand, underneath.I started holding my ball the same way,and guess what? My follow through became like reaching out to shake a hand, which was needed to get the right lift,on the ball, and it got the ball rotating right ,also. You guessed it.My backup hook was gone, and I started averaging scores from 185,to 200.All this changed, just from watching my dad.One other thing my dad taught me,was how to throw horseshoes, and keep score. That game isn’t difficult, except to get the horseshoes to spin the right way. That I had to figure out myself, because each individual has to experiment on how they hold the horseshoe. What works for one person, won’t work for another person.Like I said.My dad is a jack of all trades.Even when it comes to teaching us entertaining things.
