…let It Fly

I know it’s been a rough week for those of us nursing World Cup hangovers. I know adjusting to life after the World Cup can be hard, but Twitter just made it a lot worse.

Have you checked on your hashflags lately? You know, all of those fun flag icons you put in  your tweets about #USA  and #GER and poor, poor #BRA.

There’s no easy way to say this, but they’re gone.

I would show you what one looks like, but I can’t because Twitter took them down, because apparently they want us all to fully succumb to our World Cup withdrawal.

We knew we wouldn’t be able to share them forever, but did you have to take the old ones down too?

This tweet was once gloriously colorful. Now look at it:

It’s a shell of its former self…

Lucky for us, Marvel’s got news of another flag to distract us with. Yes, fresh on the heels of Thor’s sex change (or something like that), they’ve revealed the new identity of Captain America.

Now, before I go into details, I’d like to ask the Chris Evans fan girls to breathe. He’s not being recast. I’m talking about the comics. Steve Rogers died years ago in the comics (sort of, the comic universe is complex and layered). Okay, that might not have helped with the breathing, but we’ll get through this.

All of the Anthony Mackie fan girls, start doing your happy dance, because the next Captain America is Sam Wilson, or as many members of the media refer to him: African-American Sam Wilson

Fittingly, the announcement was made on the Colbert Report, and as Colbert fans know Stephen Colbert does not see race.

Of course the history buffs will have seen this coming. Let’s all take a minute to marvel at the brilliance of Marvel:

Sam Wilson

That is good. The character is named after Uncle Sam. Well done.

Whether or not this part of the story will make it to the big screen remains to be seen. In the meantime those of us who experience these comics through the movies and Wikipedia cheat sheets.

It’s a good week for ground breaking Marvel announcements. One can only hope this means even  bigger things are to follow at next week’s Comic Con.
