…look Around

2WC Theatre
Today, I’d like to take a moment for a subject near and dear to my heart—theater etiquette. To put that in What to Watch Wednesday terms: Today, I’d like to talk about what not to watch when you’re at the theater.

In a word: Your phone.

Messing with your phone during any theatrical performance earns you a front row seat in that fabled special circle of hell. However, those of you who got busted (respectfully) by Lin-Manuel Miranda for having your phones out during “Hamilton,” no circle of hell could be as bad as that personal shame.

Setting aside for a moment the illegality of recording a live Broadway performance for a moment, let’s take a moment to consider all of the poor, poor people around the phone lovers who finally got to see “Hamilton” and are being blinded by your screen.

Then there’s the cast, who can see you, always.

ATTN ALL audience members: We can see when you film & hear when it rings. Plus, the glow on your face ain't cute. 🙈. https://t.co/ZbpuEVX6B5

And worst of all, you’re hurting their feelings.

You worked too hard to get those tix.
I worked too hard to finish this show.
So when I see your phone instead of your face…

…it's gutting. It sucks. I block you out. I'm sorry. Too many people are working too hard. You forfeit.

Not to mention…

@Lin_Manuel It also isn't appropriate to the period! At least do an oil painting or some sort of sketch with a quill pen!

So put the phone away and enjoy the show you’re here to see, whether it’s “Hamilton” on Broadway or a high school production of “Pippin.” Put the phone away and enjoy the show.
