…look Where You’re Going

…look where you’re goingThe role of social media in our lives is one that is ever-changing.  Ultimately it’s what we make it, but if you don’t post it on Facebook did it really happen?

Point is, the world of social media moves pretty fast, blink and your “friends” have moved on to the presently greener pastures of Pinterest (of course you’ll have to click through to find their exact location).

Then there are those sites which seemingly inspire you to leave your house with the pursuit of “checking in” online again, but at a different geographic location.  The important thing is you stepped out the front door…and are mayor of that coffee shop around the corner. Congratulations your eminence.  Yes I’m talking about Foursquare, the app that (according to their self-explanation) “makes the world easier to use.”  True story.

I can remember a time (a few months back) when everyone was on Foursquare, badges were posted with honor and everyone who was anyone was letting everyone else who was anyone know where they were at all times.  My how times have changed.

Hit by a recent decline in users, the app will be introducing a new function today.  Now, not only can you let people know where you are, but Foursquare will also give you suggestions about other places.  That’s right, you can post where you are and where you’re going.  Now, that is a full service social media app.

It’s just like a GPS with an opinion.  Oh, this place is nice, but wouldn’t this place be better?  What about this place?  This place is pretty nifty.  Will it ever end?  I foresee some hipsters with whiplash.

I suppose it’s not all bad, just remember, the important thing  is that you shape social media and don’t let it shape you.  It’s easy to get lost in the online world we’ve created for ourselves and the real one.  Might want to activate the actual GPS on that smartphone, once you’re done posting about getting turned around on your way to the latest Foursquare suggestion of course.
