…make a Change

Posted on the 23 January 2016 by Zer @the2women

OscarsIt’s been just about a week since this year’s Oscar nominations were announced and in the time since, the b-word  (boycott) has been bouncing around Hollywood with comments with varying degrees of controversy from stars of all shapes and sizes sharing their disheartenment regarding the lack of diversity in this year’s nominations. It’s a topic Zer covered (quite eloquently) last Flick Friday (…Change Your Stripes) and now, not even a week later, something incredible has happened, the Academy is taking actual steps to fix its broken system and encourage a more diverse group of films & creatives.

[Shock Break]

Really. Last night the Board of Governors voted to change the rules of lifetime membership. Previously, award winners were in for life, no exceptions. And that kids is how you end up with a room (mostly) full of white men deciding what this year’s top films were.

I’m sure the next few days will bring more than a few reactions analyzing the shortcomings that still linger, and there are some to be sure. Right now though, I have to applaud the effort of the Academy to expedite change. It’s an encouraging first step, that will hopefully be reflected in the nominations in years to come.

…bi-daily smile…
