This girl sure looks like a young Dakota Fanning. Having missed this on the big screen, we finally got to watch this yesterday. I am not familiar with this story at all, so this was a first time for me.I liked the story and I instantly came to love Hugh Jackman's character, Jean Valjean. Russell Crowe, despite all the spoofs on his singing, gave a very good acting performance. It was also interesting to see Sacha Baron Cohen (from Borat, The Dictator) and Helena Bonham Carter (Tim Burton's wife and Johnny Depp's frequent co-star) together in another musical since Sweeney Todd, which was a movie I loved.
As a two hour and thirty eight minute movie, it was quite dragging at times. One hour and a half into it, I found myself wishing the movie would come to a swift end. Perhaps, it would be much more appreciated by people who are already fans of the story. It does have some shining moments, and that for me, was during the more emotional scenes where multiple characters sing together in different lines and different harmonies.
Verdict: 3.5/5 - Good movie that is well worth watching, but if you are not a fan of dramas and musicals, you will likely not enjoy this.
