"My Name is Cerridwen, and I Am a Cynic"

Posted on the 12 February 2013 by Ashleylister @ashleylister

This week’s topic is “sad Valentine’s” Now, having never had a Valentine’s before (see previous blog) I can include experience on this. Passing the shops that display bright red and white bouquets, glittery cards, heart-shaped chocolates and pink bubbly booze is the biggest taunt. It’s like a sharp slap in the face; causing you to hang your head automatically it catches your eye. Being the cynic dressed in black didn’t even make me immune to the loneliness it instilled. Not that I’d want big bouquets, glittery cards, heart-shaped chocolates and pink bubbly booze. However, that doesn’t mean I’m not a romantic. I am. I just do it a little differently. I wouldn’t mind a single red rose (I love the vibrant colour) and a bottle of golden ale.
Valentine’s day feels like its spawned from all that’s evil to mock those that are single, because society has this concept that if you’re single there’s something wrong with you, particularly if you’re a teen. There was something wrong with me; the fact that I’d gotten so pissed off with the commercial image of Valentine’s that I’d forgotten to celebrate it my own way. For years I bought my mom a card and flowers for Valentines, because she means a hell of a lot to me. Even if you don’t get on with your parents, go out with the friends and get them drunk. Nothing’s funnier than getting a crazy friend plastered. Or stay in and watch a film with your children because kids films are amusing at whatever age. Or enjoy your own company, blast the music and dance around the house in not much at all because life’s too short to believe falling in love is the answer to everything. Don’t have a sad Valentine’s.
For this blog, I’m going to copy and paste a recent Facebook status I posted (don’t sigh) It’s entirely on this topic. Around this time of the year you get people making Valentine’s puns and bitter statements about being alone, but Valentines is about love, and that doesn’t just mean Mr/Mrs right. This is a censored version of my status.
“I'm seeing a lot of people on my newsfeed throwing hatred at the concept of Valentine’s Day. First, it's far away yet you idiots. Also Valentine’s Day isn't spawned from all that’s evil to mock those that are single! Love can be found in friendships, in family, and even your furry pets. It varies. And it most certainly doesn’t often come round in red and pink fireworks with undying promises. You don't have to embark on buying chocolates and roses and all the commercial shite that they throw out (I certainly won’t) but work on showing any of the above that you love them. In any particular way”
P.s I am no longer a cynic. If I can enjoy Valentine’s, you readers can ;)
