Regular readers may have noticed a slight shift in coverage this October here at the 2WC. Now, the time has come to address the elephant in the room…
Baseball.
There hasn’t been any. Not here on the 2WC anyways.
I know that as a fan of the St. Louis Cardinals, I’ve been spoiled. October baseball is all but guaranteed most years. And frankly, it would be a welcome distraction from the political arena right now, but it was not meant to be.
Instead, for the first time in a long time, the Chicago Cubs are crashing through October.
As a Cardinal fan in the heart of Cubs country, I cannot tell you how painful of a month it has been, but I’ll try.
Saturday evening, I didn’t even have to watch the game, or check the score, as the echoes of celebratory fireworks wafted from the direction of Wrigley, I knew.
As a fan of the game, I can appreciate what an incredible moment this is for a franchise that hasn’t been to the World Series since the end of the second world war, and since their last actual World Series win, we’ve had two world wars, not to mention the invention of the telephone, formation of the NHL, NFL, and NBA, and women getting the right to vote (which is really just a sad reflection on how long it took our country to get around to that more than a dig at the Cubs. Yay history!).
People like to blame the goat, but I’m inclined to think they were cursed by their own creepy mascot:

Still, today, I would like to congratulate the Cubs. It’s not easy, it did take me quite a while to type that sentence, and really a lot of my happiness is for Bill Murray (who had a stellar weekend):
But you have my congratulations. Now, don’t get crazy, I’m not saying I’m going to root for the Cubs in the World Series, but I will not root against them, take it or leave it. But definitely enjoy it. You never know, it could be another century before you return.
