Our Wedding Day: Dancing With My Daddy

Posted on the 17 January 2012 by Msadams @HilaryFerrell

After Mr. A danced with his Mom, it was my time to dance with my Daddy.
Our Wedding Day: Dancing With My Daddy
As I’ve mentioned before, my Dad is a really shy person so I knew he was going to be super nervous.  To quell those nerves, we decided to take dance lessons together.  The funny part is that we ended up not using those dance moves at all because it was just too much to remember.  After a lesson one day, my Dad turned to me and said “Sweetie, you know that I’m not going to remember any of this.”  So that was the end of dance lessons ;)
We ended up just swaying and laughing, which is more us anyway.  I spent most of the dance telling my Dad how proud of him I was and giving him some words of encouragement.  He spent most of the time just being goofy.
Originally, we had asked our DJ to invite the crowd to dance with us after the song went on for about a minute.  For whatever reason, that never happened.  And I’m actually glad it didn’t happen because it literally will be the only time I will ever see my Daddy dancing.  So he decided to spend the last half of our dance giving me a hard time about the DJ not making the announcement.
On top of that, he loves to avoid being in pictures. Every time my sister-in-law would point the camera in his direction, he would abruptly change our dancing direction.  And I just started hysterically laughing.  That’s my Daddy.  At one point, I asked him what he was doing and he went “I’m in control of this now.”  And abruptly changed our direction again.  I guess he really does like being in the lead.
As far as the song goes, it was a complete no brainer.  A few years back, my parents, Mr. A and I went to an Edwin McCain concert where he played a brand new song called “Walk With Me.”  It was a song he wrote for a friend whose daughter was getting married.  Before the song even finished, my Mom leaned over and said “You have to dance with your Dad to this song at your wedding.”  So really the song kind of picked us.
Feel free to press play to follow along.

“I'll take this slow sweet walk with you
You'll let go of my hand to say: I do
He will discover just how blessed a life can be
I know cuz all those years ago
Someone handed you to me

Our Wedding Day: Dancing With My Daddy
Every step that we take
Brings back the memories
Winter snows and horse shows
Dancing on the beach
I can't help thinking that I'm the lucky one
You're still my baby daughter
And now I've gained a son

Our Wedding Day: Dancing With My Daddy
I'll take this slow sweet walk with you
You'll let go of my hand to say : I do
He will discover just how blessed a life can be
I know 'cause all those years ago
Your mom handed you to me
Don't miss a chance to put each other first
Now that you've vowed for better or for worse
Don't let the beauty of this life pass you by
In the times of trouble you'll stand side by side

Our Wedding Day: Dancing With My Daddy
I'll take this slow sweet walk with you
You'll let go of my hand to say : I do

Our Wedding Day: Dancing With My Daddy
I picture a slow sweet walk yet to be
When you'll take my hand and say : Daddy come see
Then you'll know what it felt like
You won't believe what it feels like
Then you'll know what it felt like
When she handed you to me

Our Wedding Day: Dancing With My Daddy
She handed you to me”

Our Wedding Day: Dancing With My Daddy
As my Dad leaned it for the last hug, he did something I totally didn’t expect.  With the last chorus of the song playing in the background, he sang the song into my ear as he held me tight.  And finished by saying “I love you sweetie.”  I immediately burst into tears.  I really shouldn’t have been surprised by this.  My Dad is famous for doing sweet things when no one is watching.  Deep down he is probably one of the sweetest people I know and I know that he would do anything for me.  Including singing a song to me in front of a hundred people because as he would say at the end of the day, our wedding was all about “my little girl.” Love you Daddy.
