Happy Top Tuesday, everyone! Today, we will be having a lesson in pitch. Pitch determines how high or low a sound is, and we will be exploring your child’s voice and other external sounds with the use of the glockenspiel.

The Activity: Pitch Walk
This activity is intended for children who are in preschool or are school-aged.
Before you begin your “Pitch Walk” with your child, talk to your child about what pitch is. Ask them to sing the highest note they possibly can, and try to find a note on the glockenspiel that matches it. Now have your child sing the lowest note they possibly and try to match this one, too, on the glockenspiel.
You are now ready to begin your walk. Bring the glockenspiel with you.
Go outdoors and take a walk around your neighborhood listening for sounds. You might possibly find a bird whistling, cars honking and zooming by, dogs barking, footsteps, sounds of other voices as they walk by, etc. Each time you encounter a new sound, ask you child to try to match the sound with their own voice. You should also try to match the sound on the glockenspiel.
When you return home, explain to your child that you have encountered a collection of pitches….possibly even one for every note on the glockenspiel. Continue to explain that music is made up of a variety of pitches, and all you need to do is mix those pitches together to come up with simple melodies and songs. Not only have you just shared a musical activity together, but you also get a bit of exercise, as well.
