…Recap

65th Emmy AwardsYesterday’s Emmy Awards had plenty of surprises (as evidenced by my 1 for 4 ballot).

For those who missed it, here’s a quick summary and my two cents on how the show went.

Surprisingly, host, Neil Patrick Harris, did not open the show with a song a dance number.  It was a bold choice which brought a slew of past hosts on to the stage.  The highlight of the opening monolog was Amy Poehler and Tina Fey heckling NPH from the front row.  Unfortunately for NPH, it also reminded us all that Amy Poehler and Tina Fey should host all awards shows.  Thankfully the host managed to rebound nicely with some funny video segments and a mid-show song and dance number.

To be fair, the droll tone of the show wasn’t entirely the host’s fault.

Spreading the ” In Memoriam” segment throughout the show was sweet, thoughtful, and, well, depressing.  It made the whole show feel like a memorial service. It was an interesting thing to do once, and was a nice change from the usual award show format, but please don’t put us through that again. Seriously.

Other highlights included “Breaking Bad” finally claiming the award for “Outstanding Drama Series,” and actress Merritt Wever stealing my acceptance speech whilst accepting the award for “Outstanding Supporting Actress In A Comedy Series” (check it out here: best acceptance speech ever).

All in all, it was an entertaining night that was neither exceptional nor exceptionally boring.
