This week, we're bidding a fond farewell to a satirical gem that's been gracing the small-screen for the past 9 years. I'm speaking, of course, about "The Colbert Report" (or the " The ColbDewar's Repewars "...it's new name for the remainder of its run).
If you haven't heard about the Report (fyi - the "t" is silent) in the last 9 years, then you might literally be living under a rock. This parody of cable news pundits may have started as a half hour satirical television program back in fall of 2005, but it quickly turned into a revolution.
If you don't believe me, then consider this, in its first episode Colbert did his first of many "The Wørd" segments. His first word was "truthiness." Just to be clear, this was not a word at the time; however, in 2006 Merriam-Webster named it the word of the year. Not bad for a series premiere.
Of course, there have been plenty more highlights since then. In 2006, Colbert headlined the White House Correspondents' Dinner, in character.
In 2009, "The Colbert Report" did four episodes for the troops in Baghdad, Iraq.
And just last week, President Obama co-hosted the Report.
Needless to say, that's a pretty impressive resume, and that's only a small fraction of what the show accomplished...Colbert also ran for president twice as part of the show. I'll stop there, otherwise this could go on forever.
If you haven't followed the show for the past nine years, you've really missed out. Colbert's character introduced a whole new generation to great, smart satire.
While the actual Stephen Colbert will be taking over the "Late Show," the fictional Colbert will be hanging up his right-wing hat for good tomorrow night. Which means all we can do for now is say thank you for all the laughs, and sit back, and enjoy the last two episodes.
