Savannah Saturdays: The Distillery

The Distillery is one of our favorite places in Savannah. It is absolutely gorgeous inside, with a huge wooden English pub-style bar, exposed brick, and hundreds of taps lining the walls from emptied kegs of the past. Considering they have 21 revolving craft beers on tap, these decorations are continuously increasing. Besides a great draft selection (we like to do the beer flight, which is 5 generous 5 ounce pours that can be created by a type, brewery, or a mix and match), they also have a big craft beer bottle selection. Our favorite is The Reverend, an oversized Quadruple bottle (Read: High Gravity aka High Alcohol Content) Belgian made from Avery Brewing Company in Boulder, Colorado that is smooth, creamy, and oh-so-delicious.
The best thing about the Distillery is their beer club membership. We have been members for going on two years, and each month, we get to come in and try a different brewery's beers--FOR FREE! We paid $40 once for a lifetime membership and now get to try 3-5 new beers every single month from now until infinity. Not only is this a fun night out, but I have always been obsessed with trying new things (be it food, wine, beer, activities, etc.) and now I get my newness "fix" every month by learning about and trying these beers. Sometimes the brewery's send down a rep so we get free stuff too, and/or they might do some pairings with cheeses or chocolates.
Craft beer is absolutely exploding, and I truly appreciate the varying flavors of an IPA compared to a Belgian, Pale Ale to Wheat, Golden Ale to Lager, Pilsner to Porter, Brown to Cider. If you haven't gone outside your comfort zone yet when it comes to beer, go pick up a "pick six" six-pack at your local Kroger (ours does a pick 6 for $8.99). Go crazy and try a few different kinds. If you don't know what to try, just write me a comment about your current favorite kind of beer or your favorite kind of food flavor, and I will suggest a few for you. If you see a Golden Monkey, grab it as it is a nice beer to try for craft beer newbies because it's soft, creamy but not thick, and a little bit sweet.  Or, go to Beeradvocate.com and look at their reviews and descriptions of beers.
