Sobriety and Imagination

Posted on the 08 January 2013 by Celestialfactory @celestial_flow

A few days back, I was having a conversation with an old friend who after undergoing substance abuse decided to clean up his act completely, he is also at the same time in my perception an amazing artist. I asked him if it was the thrill of new waves of imagination and emotions that he he wished to capture in form of paintings enticed him to linger around those deluded paths.

His claim was entirely against it, in fact according to him it didn’t only make him redundant but at the same time quite unimaginative.

In order to prove his point on how well sobriety and imagination works for him, he made a sketch of me relying solely on his imagination in a sober state of mind.

Do you agree with his point? Does the influence of certain if not all intoxications limit or broaden your imagination.

Is this really his sobriety at work that was able to sketch this without any visual aid or have certain substances plowed their seeds in his head forever and morphed his vastness of imagination?

In any case, I was very impressed by his almost accurate depiction of me, his caption for the sketch was “Imagination works fine when sober!” so I decided to re create his work by adding color.
