Sometimes You’re Just out of Luck

Notice the rain?

This is what happened on the third and final day of my mini-break last weekend. We had been enjoying some time off in a Dutch village called Sluis. On the second day, we had made a trip to Bruges in Belgium. We’d had incredible luck with the weather on the first two days; the sun had been shining brightly. On the third day we decided to drive via Antwerp to Breda, which is my place of birth. Unfortunately, it was raining. However, right after a toll and right before a tunnel (phew!) our gear shift died and we had to pull over. After calling the ANWB (the Dutch version of AAA road service), we had to wait two hours in the rain before the Belgian road service picked us up. He drove us to some small town called St. Lennaart, from which we eventually had to take a taxi to Roosendaal. This cost us over a hundred euros, which we’re going to get reimbursed by the ANWB. Then we had to take a train back to Almere. Well, at least I can now say I’ve experienced being stranded on the side of the road…
