Happy National Watermelon Day!
This unofficial melon of summer is a staple at many a backyard gathering. From Memorial Day to Labor Day we just can’t seem to get enough of this brightly colored melon.
Why is that?
Well, I have a confession to make. I have no idea. It’s not that I don’t like watermelon. I appreciate it. I even eat it. I just don’t understand the hype.
It seems like an obligatory summer dish. For as long as anyone can remember it’s always been there, so people just keep bringing it to keep the tradition alive…Even though no one can remember why it started.
Still, I suppose it’s watermelon’s day, so I should give it some credit. It is really pretty, and its non-existent flavor makes it a perfect pair for less-healthy food items like cheese and cured meats. It’s got that going for it.
So, here’s to you watermelon. You may be bland and unnecessarily messy, but we wouldn’t have it any other way… apparently.
