It’s no secret that robots are slowly taking over the world. It’s been evident for years, from our reliance on the Internet to our use of smartphones, that eventually they’ll take control.
What might surprise you, is that apparently the majority of us are okay with that. Or at least that’s the case according to researchers at MIT’s Computer Science and Artificial Intelligence Lab (but they might be a little biased).
Researchers at MIT’s Computer Science and Artificial Intelligence Lab (CSAIL) have discovered that humans prefer increased autonomy for robots.
The team ran three tests, in which they had 24 humans work along with a two-armed robot to construct a Lego kit. The first test, asked the humans to do all the work. The next, split the work right down the middle. The third, let the robot do all the work.
The incredibly depressing results showed that the humans preferred working with the robot that took more control. Although, I would like the question the conclusion that the researchers came to.
Perhaps it’s not that we would like the robots to take over our work, but that we would really like anyone to do the work for us. Yes, that makes much more sense. Laziness will be our downfall.
