Happy Pride Weekend!
This year’s Pride festivities are extra sweet thanks to the U.S. Supreme Court’s historic ruling yesterday on same-sex marriages. Plenty has been said about the Court’s legalizing of same-sex marriages in all 50 states. Thankfully, it’s been overwhelmingly positive (for the most part), which gives new hope and joy to this weekend’s celebrations.
It’s easy to forget that this has been a long time coming. Especially given the seemingly quick response and enforcement. It’s also easy to think that this is the end of a long battle for equality and acceptance.
This, unfortunately, was the easy part. Legally speaking, there was no case for why same-sex couples are not entitled to the same rights and privileges as their heterosexual counterparts. The tough part comes next. While the law may now be on the LGBT community’s side, that won’t stop some misguided individuals.
But for now, we’ll enjoy this historic moment, when at least in the eyes of the law, our country is one step closer to true equality.
