…Take Root

…Take RootHappy Earth Day Eve! Seeing as it’s also Flick Friday, it seems like the perfect excuse to show some respect to a few of the silver screen’s finest trees and tree-like characters.

More than just scenery, these beloved characters prove that, at least in the film world, trees can do a whole lot more than provide shade and convert CO2 into oxygen. They can also help drive the plot, and if necessary, save the day.

First up, it’s everyone’s favorite anthropomorphic, space tree from “Guardians of the Galaxy”—Groot. This lovable collection of limbs may have a limited vocabulary, but he proves that actions quite often speak louder than words with his undying devotion to his pal, Rocket, and the rest of the Guardians.

Next up, we have the slightly crabby orchard from “The Wizard of Oz.” While it’s easy to judge these less-than-cordial trees, I think we can all agree that we wouldn’t like to someone come along and pick something off of us.

Last, but not least, there’s the Ents of “The Lord of the Rings.” These gentle giants let the outside world do its thing, until it becomes quite clear that the outside world won’t show them the same respect. The Ents serve as a not-so-subtle reminder that when we forget to respect mother earth, nature always finds a way to strike back.
