If you’re looking for some extra motivation this Monday morning, I have some good news. We’re all getting a little bit of extra time this week.
How much?
Okay, so it’s only a second, but that doesn’t make it any less exciting. After all, some of us are quickly approaching a holiday weekend. You can use that extra second to finish up 4th of July preparations.
Why are we getting this extra second, or leap second?
Well, there’s a lot of fancy measurements down by scientists having to do with the earth’s rotation and orbit, but the slightly simplified answer is that the difference between atomic time and astronomical time has come close to one second. So the leap second will make up that difference.
When exactly will this extra second be coming? That would be tomorrow night (Tuesday June, 30th 2015), when it would usually be midnight, it will be 11:59:60, before continuing on to midnight.
What can you do with this extra time? Well, that’s entirely up to you. Although, I would suggest something simple. After all, it’s only a second.
