The Apple Watch hasn’t even been released yet, and it already has its first cancer-causing “study.”

Okay, so it’s not so much a study as a “style” article gone horribly wrong. According to a not-so-scientific article in the New York Times this week, science has yet to definitively prove that wearable tech won’t cause cancer. Which, of course, means that it technically potentially could.

Before you assume this is just a bunch of fluff meant to grab attention, you should know that the article does cite a 2011 W.H.O. panel. This particular panel found that cell phones were “possibly carcinogenic.” The article also refers to several other studies whose collective results were, at best, inconclusive.

While I can admire the desire to question the necessity of new wearable tech, trying to ignite a panic over incredibly flimsy evidence feels like an abuse of journalistic power.
