The 20’s Called and They Want Their Trumpet Back

Posted on the 29 November 2011 by Susiemcbeth @susiemcbeth
Greetings from the mystical land of Sleep Depriva! A place where REM sleep goes to die and sleeping for longer than a couple of hours is grounds for getting you kicked out of a kingdom ruled by two great and powerful baby twins. They have a mystical scream (rather ear shatteringly high pitched) that will enthral you to be at their beck and call every hour and a half and if the screams don’t work, their cute baby faces, cheeky half smiles and big blue eyes are sure to seal the deal. Rumour has it that they like to sleep in shifts in order that their loyal subjects (parents) always have 1 twin to amuse.
The twins are now 10 weeks old and Indigo weighs 9lb 1oz and River weighs 8lb 9oz. They are both developing well, physically and mentally. They are both super aware and are starting to take an interest in their toys, they are quite vocal (screaming and crying aside) and they both have their bodily functions down to a tee. River can burp as loud as a darts player on a heavy night out and Indigo toots more than a 20’s jazz band (which I take as pretty good confirmation that both of their internal systems are working perfectly).A couple of weeks ago the babies had their first immunisations. Nothing prepared me for how unsettling the experience would be - there is something very disturbing about watching your babies being stuck with a needle by 2 nurses at once. I can tell you I was really not loving that moment, and I’m not loving that I have to see them go through it all again in another couple of weeks. They were both amazingly brave. They cried for less than a minute after their injections and were very good throughout the whole outing. Plus it was fun to see them all cosy in their pram - All in all, a pretty good milestone.
So in other tales of mummyhood I have also learned how to breastfeed...hmmm maybe learn is not the right word - it is probably more accurate to say that I have been fine tuning my breastfeeding process. At least I have managed to stop Indigo from leaving little love-bites all over me - If there is a patch of skin on my body clear of fabric she will suck on it. I am now a master of redirection. Plus the fine tuning seems to have worked; I know this as it no longer feels like I am wearing a bra made out of razor blades. Is it wrong that I feel like this is cause to celebrate? I have also realised that if nappy changing was a sport I would be a serious contender – 140 nappies a week, changed at a speed only legends could whisper about. Neo eat your heart out, this is something that not even the Matrix could construct – I know, enough of the dork-talk already!
You may or may not have noticed that I have been MIA for a while. I have been struggling a bit with the infection I picked up after my section, and have been so sleep deprived I have not had a spare second to type a blog on anything other than my personal ‘Girl Friday’ (my Blackberry). Anyways I am back now and after 5 rounds of antibiotics and a wound that just won’t seem to close (I know, gross, right!) I have decided to just get it together and get back to my blog as this is what helps keep me sane. I just don’t have the patience to wait until I am all better, so I am back and I have lots of things to post about (including my birth story, though I will not be posting that until after a dear friend of mine has had her baby. I promised).
Mummyhood is definitely no cake walk, everything about you becomes about the babies and you find yourself worrying senselessly over the smallest and craziest of things, plus sleep deprivation can drive you a little onto the nutty side of the street .
It is mad; I never imagined it would be so hard or so wonderful and rewarding. When I look at River and Indigo’s faces I feel so overwhelmed with love, there is nothing I wouldn’t do for them. They are the glue to my world. I love being a mum, and I know that this is just the start of one crazy ride and I am excited to be on it.
I have posted a few new pictures of them below.
